Concealing The Smart Blinds In Your Home

Lots of homeowners are becoming more aware of the benefits associated with smart blinds and they are an incredibly popular addition to properties these days. Being able to control these blinds at a touch of a button, whether this is via a wall switch, a remote control or a phone app, makes them the first choice for many who are wanting to upgrade their window coverings and they are undeniably a brilliant investment to make.

When wanting to install smart blinds in your home, you will have lots of different design decisions to make, including how you’re going to conceal the workings of the blind. There are a few different options available in this regard and to help you choose which concealment solution is best for your smart blinds, below we have looked into them in more detail.

Blind cassettes

The vast majority of smart blinds are in a cassette and this is usually because they are being retro-fitted. Installing a blind within a cassette is a brilliant way to ensure all of the internal workings are smartly hidden and you won’t have to worry about any unattractive wires and battery packs being visible.

Commonly, blind cassettes are a popular choice because they prevent the need to hire a builder to create a recess for the blind. This solution will make installing smart blinds more affordable and also prevent an unnecessary amount of disruption during the installation phase. Whilst the design of the cassette case will differ from one manufacturer to another, there tends to be multiple colours available and you sometimes have the option to inlay fabric into the cassette case too, ensuring that it perfectly matches the blind you’re installing.

Blind pockets

When installing smart blinds during the renovation or building stage, blind pockets are the slickest option. These blind pockets will essentially hide the workings of the smart blind in the ceiling and leave a narrow slit for the blind to run down through. Usually, blind pockets are 130mm x 100mm in size as a minimum but a 100mm x 100mm version is available.

The blind pockets that we use at The Smart Blind Co. are manufactured in aluminium by Blindspace and they’re made-to-measure for every order. Blind pockets provide a seamless and minimalistic look, and they are the ideal solution if you’re interested in installing smart blinds on your exterior doors as well as your windows. When you opt for blind pockets, you can choose whether you’d like the blind slit to be towards the window or the room, so if you have bulky window handles, then you don’t need to worry about your blinds getting caught.

Blind recesses

Another option that is best suited to the renovation or building stage is a blind recess and this is a more affordable option when compared to blind pockets. Again, this concealment solution involves the workings of the blind being hidden in the ceiling, but it doesn’t require as much space as blind pockets.

In addition to being both a budget-friendly and space-saving solution, blind recesses are also ideal for rooms like the bedroom where blackout blinds are going to be used. It is easy to create channels on either side of the window recess for the blind to run down and these channels will help to prevent light bleeding around the side of the blind. An experienced builder will be able to advise you on how wide and deep the blind recesses need to be, and this will differ depending on the type of blind that you’re wanting to install. We quite often see the blind being recessed and combined with plantation shutters to provide extra privacy and control of light.
